USA - Today, a big thank you is going out from police and victims of a violent park beating caught on tape. Yesterday, police arrested an 18 year old with the help of an anonymous tip and a service that's been called a big ally in the fight on crime. News 3's Kori Chambers explains why some say Crimestoppers is living up to it's name.
It has come a long way in it's 25 years, leading to thousands of arrests in cases from burglaries to murders. Today, they're celebrating yet another big arrest which they don't think will be their last.
The images were seen from coast to coast, which is where dozens and dozens of tips poured in from. But who made the call that finally lead to the arrest of 18 year old Elvin Avila? We'll probably never know, which some say is the beauty of the Crimestoppers program. "We don't have caller ID, we don't have anything."
"They can remain anonymous, they can protect their identity and they can earn a reward. "In 25 years, 100 thousand plus calls have led to more than 10 thousand arrests in crimes ranging from the petty to the heinous.
Most recently, we've seen tips lead to the arrest of a man charged with lighting
one valley driver on fire, and another man charged with a beating a person
to death in a Wal-Mart parking lot. "Everyone we've had looked like the guy
on the tape. I didn't know that many guys looked like that."
In the case of the baseball bat beating, police will tell you that leads were everything, despite a vast majority of them falling short. It only took one good tip to lead them to the 18-year-old who gave them a confession in the case. "It's the cat and mouse came of catching, not only the mouse but the correct mouse."
